Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Director of Newsgathering Operations, you will supervise the Field Support Team and our Ontario Fleet of 90 vehicles. 

We are seeking a passionate, highly organized, and detail-oriented People Manager to join our Newsgathering Operations team. You will have a generalist background in broadcasting/streaming, fleet management and be responsible for a team of 5 employees who support all CBC News content producers while they are on assignment: this includes a team of 40 Toronto based videographers

You will play a crucial role in creating an engaging, high-performing, and safe work environment for our employees and championing our culture. The role requires a balance between being an advocate for employees and aligning HR practices with the organization's strategic objectives.

You will recommend cost-effective solutions and implement reliable technical systems in order to fulfill all the technical requirements of field production. You will be expected to work unscheduled overtime when it is deemed necessary. 

Finally you will be a problem-solver while managing staff, deployments, logistics, scheduling all in alignment with CBC News priorities including to be live and omnipresent for our audience.

Main responsibilities and impact:
 

  • Manage the Ontario fleet including ensuring compliance for each vehicle, and overseeing vehicle registration, insurance, plate renewals, fleet credit cards, drivers' approvals, Geotab, log books (for heavy vehicles), keywatcher access, approvals, accident management, vehicle rental agreements, replacement program and upfitting, disposals, approval of repairs, etc. The manager will keep track of vehicle activity and will recommend best practices to improve geographical coverage and improve newsgathering effectiveness - 40%


 

  • Introduction and implementation of new technologies and workflows
    • Research and prepare proposal and recommendations for the efficient usage of the Ontario fleet
    • Contribute to the development and updating of vehicle acquisition plans and be responsible for preparing business cases and requests for the procurement/replacement of fleet vehicles.
    • Video camera testing & purchasing
    • Covert recording equipment purchasing
    • Testing and implementation of iPhone apps
    • Continous improvement in timeliness of content delivery to our audience


 

  • Oversight of Personal Protective Equipment, including in international deployments, with a budget of approximately $50k/yearly: international deployments - 10%


 

  • Autonomous management of the field equipment inventory, purchases and budget oversight, with a budget of approximately $100k to $150k/yearly - 10%


 

  • Recruit, hire & onboard new team members - 10%
    • Collaborate with educational institutions on internships and recruitment
    • Leverage our recruitment team and the tools and support they provide


 

  • Guide training and support staff growth - 10%
    • Arranging for training opportunities e.g. training on the Keywatcher system, technical writing, etc.
    • Deploying team members to backfill our international bureaus
    • Coordinate and manager the work team members perform with other teams such as in resources, editing, etc.


 

  • Conduct performance evaluation and salary review of team members - 10%


 

  • Manage and resolve conflicts including, but not limited to, conflicts on assignments, resource allocation, work expectations, and interpersonal relationships - 10%


The successful candidate will Manage this area independently including daily decision making. 

Relationship types:

  • Works in tandem with APS Supervisor of Transmission and CMG Supervisor of Transmission
  • Will seek maintenance support from T&I
  • Will liaise with Editorial Leadership

  • Works in close cooperation with the Manager of Field Operations


Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

Education: 
 

  • University degree or related experience.


Experience (relevant to the role): 
 

  • 3+ years of experience in a similar role.


Knowledge and Skills: 
 

  • A strong interest in technology and innovation.
  • A great leader and people manager
  • In-depth knowledge of fieldwork and vehicle fleet management
  • Understanding of video transmission technology.
  • A passion for following the latest in innovative technology.
  • A genuine interest in News and Current Affairs.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a diverse group of creative individuals.
  • Skilled at communicating with vendors in regard to purchasing, technical issues, or support.
  • Familiarity with Television and Radio production systems, implementation of new technology, and ability to coordinate system upgrades.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to translate technical ideas into a business context when presenting a rationale for improvements or changes
  • Provide updates and progress reports to management.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to speak French is considered an asset.
