GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Supervisor, Fleet Operations is responsible for providing guidance, mentorship, and support to their area. The incumbent leads the area and sets priorities to ensure the department is an effective and proficient part of Public Works. The incumbent is responsible for preparation of contracts based upon operating requirements, Alberta Transportation, and Occupational Health and Safety regulations. Primary responsibilities of this position include:

Employee Development: Performs supervisory tasks for assigned team members. Works with team to plan and balance workload. Ensure teams are managed fairly and consistently, and that work processes are followed and coordinated to ensure service levels. Mentors, coaches, and provides support to staff. Assists in recruitment and training of staff.

Research and Implementation: Participates in the continuous research, development, improvement and implementation of effective departmental strategies, tools, and guidelines based on the Municipality's best practices. Analyzes the effectiveness of department programs and makes suggestions for further improvement. Provides guidance with equipment planning, research, and analysis to ensure requirements are met and adequate or if changes are required to ensure new technology is being utilized. Provides input to department business plans, initiatives, and budget to ensure continuous achievement of department goals. Assists with acquisitions and disposals, including preparation of surplus equipment for auction.

Departmental Guidance: Participates in the development of fleet strategic plans, business plans, and operational budgets. Assists with the development and implementation of effective procurement, specifications, administrative directives, and guidelines. Routinely inspects work in progress and participates in monthly safety meetings; advises crews if required changes.

SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Ability to empower people, and use innovative approaches in situations involving rapid change, shifting priorities, and/or simultaneous demands.
  • Excellent analytical skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to assess situations from a business perspective.
  • Strong organization and project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven customer focus and demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with internal customers, external providers, and industry contacts.
  • Attention to detail and adherence to administrative directive, policy, and legal requirements.
  • Proficient in SAP and other fleet software applications.
  • Proficient working in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of equipment and processes used in Fleet Services.
  • Ability to work with vendors to ensure stock levels of materials required are maintained.


EDUCATION: 

 

  • Degree or Diploma in Business Administration or Commerce is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Four (4) years with a degree, or six (6) years with a diploma, of progressive fleet operations experience including two (2) years in a leadership/supervisory capacity is required.
  • Experience working in a public-sector environment with unionized and non-unionized employees is considered an asset.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

 

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid Class five (5) Operator's License is preferred as incumbent may be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.

As per Section 2 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the incumbent shall ensure, while in the employ of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the health and safety of employees, contractors, and the public. 

This position is employed in a supervisory capacity. As such, the employee is required to obtain additional safety training in accordance with municipal procedures and directives.
