The Vehicle Operator 1 - Warehouse Services is responsible for the safe operation of a Division vehicle to pick-up and deliver a range of materials, equipment and mail within the City of Edmonton and surrounding area. The job is also required to perform routine mailroom duties that include sorting, loading and unloading vehicles, classifying and metering Division mail. Upon completion of daily duties, the incumbent will assist with additional duties.
The work is strongly guided by the Alberta Traffic Laws. The work is also guided by department standards and practices; Occupational Health and Safety (OHS); Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS); Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations; Division/department policies and procedures and the Division's goals and objectives
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safe operation of Division vehicles in adherence to Alberta Traffic Laws, department and Division policies regarding operation of vehicles
- Pick-up and deliver pre-arranged materials, equipment and mail within Edmonton and surrounding areas
- Ensure vehicle is maintained in a clean and road-worthy condition by performing daily cleaning, and routine maintenance checks
- Report any traffic tickets, accidents, defects or mechanical problems to supervisor and maintain records of vehicle mileage pertaining to regular maintenance schedules
- Assist Warehouse Services staff to handle peak workloads and aid cover-off absences
- Resolve problems with late deliveries, damaged goods and missing items
- Assist with warehouse duties including accepting deliveries and signing for deliveries, picking orders, shipping, housekeeping and counting inventory and dealing with customers while loading their vehicles
- Participate in unit meetings
- Participate in special events and celebrations
- Maintaining company-issued phone on hand and in working condition
- Accountable for keeping up to date with all company-related communications (email, online, verbal)
- Perform other duties as assigned
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma
- Knowledge of Edmonton and area with a well-developed understanding of road and traffic systems
- Knowledge of OHS, WHMIS and TDG regulations
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and practices
- Knowledge of Division and department policies and procedures
- Working knowledge of Microsoft programs - Word, Outlook and the Internet
- General knowledge of the Division's operations and the school's programs is required
- Valid Alberta driver's license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton and surrounding areas.
- Ability to provide a clean Driver's Abstract upon hire and as requested
- Ability to maneuver large vehicles in to tight spaces
- Ability to operate material handling equipment - reach forklift, pallet jack (powered and non-powered), etc. is an asset
- Physically able to complete the duties of the Job using appropriate tools and techniques and the ability to lift up to 30 Kg (66lb)
- Ability to schedule and plan task priorities to meet deadlines and manage conflicting demands
- Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with teachers, students, co-workers and the general public
