POSITION TITLE: Product Engineering Manager - Vehicle Controls
LOCATION: Sudbury, Ontario or Collingwood, Ontario

The Position: As the leader for the Controls team within our Advanced Vehicle Technology Organization, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our telemetry technology. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, your expertise will drive the data helping optimize vehicle performance, enhancing safety, and ensuring operational efficiency. The team of mechatronics engineers is based in Sudbury, where our underground test mine and facility are, and Collingwood, where our prototype manufacturing is headquartered. The team is responsible for collecting the technical requirements and architecture underpinning the design and build-out of our control platform, autonomy, and data ecosystem. You will be responsible for the proper product definition and verification for hydro-mechanical or electrical subsystems controlling the vehicle. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of a rapidly growing technology sector, directly contributing to innovative solutions for real-world challenges in underground mining battery electric and diesel telemetry.
Responsibilities and Duties
Technical Leadership and Mentorship
- Lead a team of engineers responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining scalable digital control systems across 30+ vehicle classes and advanced technology features.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Develop and refine control system architectures leveraging Ethernet and CAN protocols, including CANOpen and J1939, to enable efficient communication, data processing, and integration across vehicle systems.
- Specify and evaluate LiDAR, radar, and other perception sensors for autonomy readiness, ensuring compatibility with control system architectures and seamless integration into vehicle and off-vehicle communication networks.
Control Systems Development
- Own the architecture, development, and operation of digital control systems from their concept phase through to production release.
- Implement best software, electrical, hydr-mechanical best practices for CAN based control systems.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including product management, QA, and operations to align technology solutions with business objectives.
- Act as a technical liaison with stakeholders, providing updates, gathering requirements, and addressing technical concerns as well as work closely with project management to plan and track project progress.
Documentation and Compliance
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of system architecture, configurations, and processes.
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations like ISO-13849 and industry best practices.
First Year Goals:
People: Foster teamwork and create team identity by establishing the new team, a collection of SMEs in related domains, as a cohesive unit, aligned on shared goals. Leverage true collaboration and knowledge sharing across shared domains, like mechatronics engineering and control theory, as well as overlapping functions in differing domains, like testing in HIL and SIL environments, to mature the team and its interdepartmental impact.
Processes: Define a streamlined process for integrating large new development projects into the cross-departmental new capital vehicle builds process by improving software release tooling and pipelines, factory and site acceptance testing, communication, project performance metrics and KPIs, and stakeholder reporting between agile and waterfall managed projects, and building the team's projects into better leveraged critical vehicle tooling.
Products:
- Learn the current and envisioned future state of MacLean Engineering's core underground and surface mining product line's control systems.
- Advance the design and implementation of new CAN bus control product "MacLean Operating System (MOS)" with new top level architecture designs for 4 vehicle application types (I.e. Rockbreaker).
- Own the safe design of new feature additions, like transitioning to joystick steering, for both EV and diesel carrier architectures, electrical schematics, and software implementions.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. They will demonstrate organizational skills, discipline, an aptitude for proactive learning, and a positive attitude. Additionally, they should meet the following qualifications:
- Minimum 8+ years of experience with the job responsibilities and duties described above.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in other languages, primarily Spanish and French, is an asset.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field is an asset.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or similar certification is an asset.
- Mobile vehicle telemetry and Mining experience are an asset
