Position Summary
Reporting to the Supervisor, Municipal Enforcement, the Community Peace Officer Level I is responsible for enforcing provincial statutes and municipal bylaws for the City of Fort Saskatchewan and investigating inquiries and public complaints including animal control.
Responsibilities
include, but are not limited to:
• Comply with and support Municipal Enforcement policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
• Provide professional testimony in Court and prepare/produce evidence to support prosecutions.
• Promote and enhance traffic safety and the Municipal Enforcement Traffic Safety Plan through conventional traffic enforcement, commercial vehicle enforcement and the use of driver feedback signs.
• Conduct directed or pro-active bike, foot and vehicle patrols to enhance the security of the community.
• Liaise and collaborate with RCMP Officers as part of joint or mutual investigations, or during enforcement of municipal and provincial laws.
• Establish or maintain ongoing professional relations with the local Crown Prosecutors' office, other provincial or municipal resources or agencies.
• Conduct or contribute to public education related to the mandate of Community Peace Officer including law, animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, youth and/or adult traffic safety, bicycle safety, community standards and related matters.
Qualifications
This position requires a minimum of a two (2) year Law Enforcement College Diploma or University Degree in a related field or equivalent experience within the law enforcement field. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in Alberta legislation and municipal laws, Justice System proceedings; and be eligible for appointment as a Community Peace Officer Level 1 by Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. A minimum of two (2) years' experience working in Municipal Enforcement or related field is required. Candidates must possess and retain an RCMP enhanced reliability security check; be proficient in Microsoft Office and possess excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Training (CVSA) North American Standard Level 1 certification is required and must be maintained. Current Radar/LIDAR certification; certification through the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association; knowledge of RCMP protocols and systems; and enhanced authorities granted by Alberta Justice and Solicitor General are considered assets. The successful candidates must have passed a physical fitness (PARE) test current within the last 6 months. A valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license is required, and the candidate must be available to work various shifts.
This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. A current Driver's Abstract will be required at the time of interview.
Hours of Work: Varying shifts; days, nights, and weekends (1950 annual hours)
