GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, the Fleet Operator operates and performs minor maintenance on a variety of municipal fleet equipment. The incumbent is required to provide towing services and transport equipment of varying sizes between locations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Transport and/or tow damaged municipal fleet vehicles and equipment to the municipal fleet shop or another safe location for servicing and repairs.
  • Ensure tow vehicle is staged and ready for rapid response at all times.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including but not limited to towing and recovery equipment, dump truck, front end loader, forklift, skid steer, truck and trailer and man lift trucks.
  • Provide support to other departments/branches by transporting vehicles and equipment to and from various locations as per their operational needs.
  • Load and unload various materials and chemicals, using mobile equipment if required.
  • Utilize Hydrovac equipment at wash bays and various facilities.
  • Support winter operations by performing snow clearing duties at various municipal locations.
  • Clean, service and maintain assigned vehicle as per required schedule.
  • Assist the Fuel and Lube Technicians and Heavy/Light Duty Technicians as required.
  • Fuel Municipal vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Perform minor operational repairs, such as but not limited to changing ground engagement tooling, boosting batteries, flat tire changes, greasing, etc.
  • Complete and maintain Hours of Service Logbook, Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports, and report any mechanical problems to the Foreman or Supervisor as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the fleet yards and storage facilities.
  • May be required to perform some manual labour using a variety of hand/power tools and equipment.
  • Participate in the RMWB training program as required by operations.
  • Complete field level hazard assessments (FLHAs) and incident reports as necessary.
  • Adhere to procedures, quality standards and safety requirements relative to each job being performed.
  • Participate actively as a team member and support various health and safety, energy conservation, and operational cost effectiveness and initiatives.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to both external and internal clients, as applicable.
  • Perform other related duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Ability to competently operate and tow damaged equipment on public roadways.
  • Proficient in rigging and load securement techniques.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in applicable occupational health and safety regulations and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work alone, demonstrating responsibility and reliability.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, keep simple records, communicate respectfully with co-workers and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Must be able to determine priority in the case of an emergency.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Two (2) years of a combination of experience in the operation of truck and trailer combination, tow trucks, and mobile equipment such as but not limited to loader, forklift and skid steer is required.
  • Experience must include vehicle towing and recovery.
  • Previous emergency response experience in relation to motor vehicle accidents and towing is an asset.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

 

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid Class One (1) Operator's License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Q-endorsement (Air Brakes) is required.
  • Equipment field testing and/or competency testing will be required as part of the interview evaluation.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
  • Ability to work a rotating shift that includes holidays, evening/night shift, and weekends.
