The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Fleet and Facilities, this position is responsible to for overseeing the daily operations of the fleet shop and ensuring the effective servicing, maintenance, and repair of all municipal vehicles and equipment. This role involves managing work assignments for both minor and major repairs, supervising shop staff, and ensuring all work meets quality standards. The Lead Mechanic also plays a critical role in maintaining the operational readiness of the fleet, minimizing downtime and will coordinate with external vendors as required.

Responsibilities
 

  • Diagnose, service, maintain, inspect and repair all municipal vehicles and equipment.
  • Oversee and assign work orders to internal staff and external vendors to ensure priorities align with daily operational needs.
  • Develop work scope for both major and minor repairs, including cost and labor estimates.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including inspections and routine servicing.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed logbooks, operational records, and maintenance reports for tracking and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare requisitions for parts, materials and supplies as required.
  • Service and repair small engines, mowers and ancillary equipment as required.
  • Assist with assembly, removal, and adjustments of attachments to various pieces of equipment.
  • Conduct commercial vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with Alberta's Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulations and maintain all required certification and documentation.
  • Perform other related duties as required, including leadership tasks, emergency callouts or special projects.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly shop, tools, and service-related equipment.


Education, Qualifications, and Work Experience
 

  • Valid Alberta Journeyperson certification as an 'Automotive Service Technician' or 'Heavy Equipment Technician' is required. Red Seal certification is preferred.
  • 5 years of journeyperson experience, preferably within a municipal fleet environment.
  • A valid Alberta Commercial Vehicle Inspection (CVIP) license or ability to acquire is required, along with the ongoing re-certification to maintain the license.
  • A valid Class 3 with air endorsement.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision and also collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and external vendors, utilizing sound decision-making, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Extensive experience in all aspects of vehicle and equipment maintenance, including diagnosing, repairing, and servicing various types of machinery. Knowledge of mechanical systems, welding, and metal fabrication techniques.
  • Proficient in operating computerized diagnostic tools and troubleshooting systems efficiently, ensuring proper testing procedures are followed for all components.
  • Strong leadership abilities with excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to coordinate teams, assign tasks, and ensure work is completed in a timely and effective manner.
  • Skilled in utilizing computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track work orders, inventory and develop service schedules.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other software tools for reporting and record keeping.
  • Able to maintain accurate logs, records, and documentation of all maintenance work, ensuring compliance with operational/organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Able to adapt to changing work demands, including being available for emergency callouts or performing shift work when required.
  • Good physical condition and ability to perform heavy manual labour.
