Job description

Battery cells are the common denominator for every Tesla product. Our product requirements demand ground-up cell architectures with state-of-the-art performance, manufactured at volumes that are orders of magnitude higher than the products they power. Our environment is fast-paced and incredibly exciting, so being passionate and self-motivated to push your limits is critical. Our team works with engineering groups across various disciplines, requiring strong communication skills and a team-first mentality. You will work alongside seasoned industry experts, high aptitude recent graduates, and people from every stage in between. We look for anyone with an exceptional ability to solve problems in both individual and team settings. Our team is heavily focused on cell design, electrolyte, and active materials selection, validation, and qualification. Your responsibility will be spearheading cross-functional team validation efforts of cell materials within our vendor cell programs, driving electrochemical stack designs, and bring our team's expertise in materials, design, and electrochemical data interpretation to the next level.

Responsibilities

  • Drive physical and electrochemical electrode design from concept to production, working with cell development teams and vendors
  • Interface with the broader cell development teams to define electrode design targets (fast charge, lifetime, cost, etc.) for current and future cell programs
  • Work with cell materials component owners and mechanical design engineers to understand, document, and disseminate material and design options for the electrode stack
  • Interface with our strategic partners and internal stakeholder by providing and analyzing key results and risks
  • Provide solutions to cell performance discrepancies with electrode design options (e.g., loading, density, composition, etc.), alternate anode design, cathode design, and electrolyte formulations proposals, combining upstream stack design targets with process capability to determine realistic designs

Requirements

  • Degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with battery cell operation, design, and testing
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate and consolidate information across multiple stakeholders and teams
  • Experience taking a product or design from concept to manufacturing
