Position Snapshot

The duties and responsibilities of the Fleet Technician are performed under the direct supervision of the Manager of Fleet. This position ensures that maintenance services are provided to Municipal Departments enabling the functional and efficient use of fleet vehicles and equipment.

What you'll be doing

As a Fleet Technician, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 

  • Diagnosing, troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and overhauling all Municipal vehicles and equipment.
  • Participating in training on fleet equipment and to ensure efficiency and high standard of quality and service.
  • Performing MTO Annual Safety Certifications on Municipal vehicles.
  • Performing preventative maintenance on all municipal vehicles.
  • Initiating repair requisitions for parts and supplies.
  • Maintaining accurate repair records in computerized fleet management program.
  • Providing mechanical and technical guidance to operating and administrative staff.
  • Ensuring adherence to all Corporate policies and procedures including Administrative, Departmental and Health & Safety.
  • To share in the on-call coverage 24/7/365.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.


What you bring

The successful candidate will have:
 

  • A Secondary school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience to the satisfaction of the Director of Public Works.
  • Must possess 310T and 310S Mechanics Licenses, and a minimum of three (3) years related experience or possess the equivalent education and experience to the satisfaction of the Director of Public Works.
  • Maintenance experience with Emergency Services equipment and vehicles, as well as with heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge in applicable legislation i.e.: OHSA; Highway Traffic Act. CMVS
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Driver's License Class "DZ" is required and having access to a reliable transportation.
  • Must hold current First Aid and WHMIS certification.
  • Proficient in computer software applications including, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Follow best practices and take a proactive approach to meet demands of the workplace.
  • Able to work under tight timelines, emergency conditions and prioritize/coordinate work.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop effective working relationships with staff and other Municipal Departments.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Certified- I.C.E. /NG -would be an asset.
  • CFC/ODP Certified - would be an asset.
  • Training in Heavy Duty electrical, Computer based diagnostics, Multiplex wiring, Hydraulics, Welding - would be an asset.
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada.

  • Salary: $34.05 to $42.46 per hour - Code 7 of the 2024 CUPE Inside Collective Agreement.
  • Hours of work: 40 hours per week including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Additional information and requirements

Public Works Employees are subject to standby, on call duty and may be required to work out of any Public Works location depending on work schedules and manpower requirements. Employees hired externally or from another Department will be scheduled into shifts Monday through Sunday.

Applicants selected to participate in testing must bring the following mandatory items at time of testing:
 

  1. A current Driver's Abstract.
  2. Proof of a valid Ontario Driver's License Class "DZ" Drivers License.


Prior to starting the position, the successful candidate must provide, at their own expense, a current (within the last 180 days) satisfactory criminal reference check, from a Canadian Police Information Centre. Criminal Records Checks from third party agencies are not acceptable. Applicants who have been employed with the Municipality within the last year and have provided a criminal reference check within the last 365 days are exempt from providing another criminal reference check.

Pre-employment testing for this position may include written and oral testing, to assist in determining the successful applicant. A passing score will be considered to be 60% on each test with the highest score considered in the award.
