The Vehicle Transportation Inspection is a Division of DPW and are responsible for safety and compliance through education, inspections and enforcement for all road users that operate on our highways.

We inspire public confidence in the public passenger transportation service through education and enforcement of Acts and Regulations that pertain to all road users in our province.

About Our Opportunity

Under the general supervision of the Regional Manager, the Motor Vehicle Inspector 2 (Compliance Station Inspector) interacts with the commercial trucking industry with the view of ensuring the safety of all road users and protecting the highway infrastructure of Nova Scotia.

Primary Accountabilities

The Compliance Station Inspector is expected to verify vehicle compliance with the Motor Vehicle Act and any Regulations that deal with commercial vehicles. They also conduct vehicle mechanical and document inspections, under the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance guidelines. Applicants must be physically able to check commercial vehicles and loads for safety and mechanical fitness. Also, as a Special Constable, this position ensures compliance with National Safety Code requirements and Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Standards.

Qualifications and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent plus seven years of related experience in commercial transportation, vehicle repair or vehicle inspection is required; or appropriate accreditation such as Red Seal endorsements in truck/bus transport repair and/or automobile service technician certification plus four (4) years of experience as a journeyperson in that trade; an acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.

To be considered, applicants must demonstrate a good working knowledge of computer use including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and other applications. Candidates must also demonstrate an understanding of quality customer service principles, possess sound judgement and the ability to act independently or as part of a team in accordance with established policies, practices and regulations. Candidates must possess effective communication skills both verbal and in writing.

Appointment as a special Constable is necessary, therefore a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and a clean criminal record are required.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

The successful candidate must have a proven track record of managing highly stressful situations in an extremely fast paced environment. You may also be exposed to fumes, scents, allergens, and adverse weather conditions. May include long hours driving including highway patrol activities. Frequent pulling, prying and lifting involving medium to heavy weight; working in difficult and/or awkward positions.

Pay Grade: TE 22 

Salary Range: $2,189.32 - $2,574.66 Bi-Weekly
