Position Overview

Reporting to the Fleet Supervisor, the Mechanic II position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on City owned fleet assets including, but not limited to, light, medium, heavy duty vehicles and off the road equipment (OTR), diagnoses mechanical, hydraulic and electrical failures, recommends required repairs, verifies completion of repair work, and updates documents as required.

Responsibilities
• Performs inspections, preventative maintenance, diagnoses equipment failures and performs repairs on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment including but not limited to cars, light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and OTR equipment.
• Ensures City prescribed preventive maintenance and repair activities are performed safely, economically and in accordance with all legislative requirements under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and the MTO safety guideline as prescribed in the Motor Vehicle Inspection Station License that the Fleet Management Services Department operates under. Ensures safe operation of all the City vehicles, equipment and tools.
• Assists in training operators in the day-to-day routine maintenance of City equipment as needed.
• Originates/completes paperwork for Fleet Supervisor's approval, to supply parts and materials needed to repair and maintain equipment and inventory to meet maintenance needs for daily operations (i.e. fluids, oils, etc.).
• Liaises with staff, supervisors, and managers regarding repairs to "Out of Service" defective equipment to avoid safety violations and further damage to components.
• Liaises with contractors, as required.
• Performs off site repairs, as required.
• Completes documentation as required for compliance standards.
• Identifies equipment deficiencies and recommends corrective repairs.
• Responsible for maintaining/securing City tools entrusted to the personal care of the mechanic.
• Participates in testing and evaluation of new vehicle products and technologies.
• Responsible for ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and the corporate Occupational Health and Safety Policy and related procedures.
• Performs other duties related to the position which may occur in an unplanned or emergency situation.

Qualifications and Experience
• Complete of a two (2) year Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship Program and valid membership in the Ontario College of Trades and Apprentices.
• Minimum of five (5) years' licensed experience in repair and maintenance of small to heavy equipment components; including electrical diagnosis, hydraulics, air brakes, steering, suspension, engines (i.e. diesels, two and four stroke, gasoline and alternate fuels) and welding.
• Automotive Service Technician (310S) and/or Truck and Coach Technician (310T)
• Must be proficient with electronic diagnostic tools including computerized scanners, accessing the internet for specific diagnostic codes, using online diagnostic databases software.
• Demonstrated ability in arc and gas welding for repairs and fabrication.
• Ability to work outside normal business hours, as required.
• Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in the City's core competencies as well as relevant departmental functional
competencies.
• A valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license and reliable vehicle for corporate use.

Preferred Qualifications: 
• Ozone Depletion license (OPD)
• Valid class "D" driver's license and successful completion of "Z" endorsement

Working Conditions:
• 100% of time in shop environment, and various locations within the City of Vaughan with potential exposure to seasonal/environmental elements, heat, cold, noise and vehicle fumes. 
• Will require the use of applicable protective equipment eg: safety boots, glasses, and vests.
• Available to work flexible hours including weekends and respond to after hours emergencies, as required.
