Ballard's MEA Manufacturing Team has an opening for an Team Lead role in the Coating & CCM Manufacturing group. This position will be located at our Burnaby facility. The successful candidate will lead the Catalyst Coated Membrane (CCM) production processes as part of Ballard's Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) Manufacturing team. This role will involve working with multiple teams across the company that include R&D, Product Development, Quality, Production, EH&S (Safety), and Maintenance to meet Operations department and company business objectives such as customer deliverables, implementation and qualification of scale-up projects, and product maturity level readiness.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the team for coating process development and production activities for CCM manufacturing that involves optimizing processes for safety, quality, yield, and capacity by collaborating with upstream and downstream process leads.
- Deliver on key R&D initiatives in the development of new CCM designs demonstrating proof-of-principle concepts by collaborating with R&D and understanding the trade-offs between design and manufacturability for scaling up.
- Plan and drive execution of continuous improvement projects to reduce process cycle time, cost, and to improve capacity, quality. Validate and communicate changes to assist in capacity and demand forecasting.
- Development and procurement of future manufacturing equipment in the CCM area. Initiate technical discussion with external equipment suppliers, establishing qualification plans for equipment and process, assist with installation by collaborating with Maintenance team and external contractors.
- Identify and resolve quality issues through monitoring and process control by utilizing statistical tools followed by regular feedback to production operators and engineering team to communicate lessons learned and improvement plans.
- Generate, maintain, and update engineering documentations, including specifications, process flow diagrams, control plans, work instructions. Timely release of new or modified process documents, following internal change management process, to ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Analyze and communicate technical information, including process capability, work-flow deviation, nonconformance and quality issues, yield, and cycle time analysis to cross-functional or management team on a regular basis.
- Optimize processing parameters as required to continue achieving Production yield targets.
- Lead and resolve quality related issues using 8D problem solving method to identify root cause(s) and determining a short-term fix while implementing long-term solution(s).
- Mentor and provide technical guidance as part of the on-going culture to foster team and career growth.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Materials, Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
- Professional Engineering designation (or eligibility) is an asset.
- Minimum 7-8 years of manufacturing or process development experience.
- Strong communication, observation, and analytical skills to troubleshoot process and quality-related issues.
- Hands-on approach with troubleshooting processes in past work experience is an asset.
- Experience with engineering practices such as Lean Six Sigma, FMEA, Design of Experiment, SPC, noise factor analysis, Kaizen, 5S, and familiarity with automotive industry standards such as ISO and IATF certification process are an asset.
- Knowledge of technical documentation related to manufacturing, including use of control plan, FMEA, process flow diagram, SOP, process and product specifications, setup checklist, equipment requirement, facility drawing.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills supported by strong data analysis skill (using Excel or other statistical software such as Minitab).
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent team player with experience working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
- Experience with web handling, lamination, and converting equipment would be an asset.
The typical hiring range for this position is $93,840 - 117,300. Ballard considers many factors in determining total compensation, including the successful Candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, experience, position location, and internal equity.
