What the role entails

The Student Fleet Technician is responsible for assisting in conducting minor repairs to the Municipality of Clarington Fleet vehicles and equipment, administration of work orders and identification of hazards and deficiencies.

Responsibilities

The following responsibilities and duties of this position includes but is not limited to:
 

  • Assisting with inspection of municipal vehicles and equipment
  • Minor repairs/servicing to municipal vehicles and equipment
  • Assisting with inventory and shop cleaning
  • Assisting with administration of work order/service requests


Qualifications
 

  • Candidates are being hired through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Program. In accordance with the CSJ Program, interested applicants must meet the following criteria:
  1. Be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the beginning of employment.
  2. Must be able to legally work in Canada.
  • Enrolled in, or recent completion of, a post-secondary educational program related to a Truck and Coach or Automotive Technician program is preferred.
  • Candidates must be available from April 28 to August 29, 2025 inclusive. Time off for vacation is not permitted during this employment period.
  • Excellent customer service and good interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to interact with the public courteously and efficiently.
  • Strong communication skills, able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR "C" certification would be an asset.
  • Current Health and Safety/WHMIS training would be an asset.
  • Candidates must provide their own safety "green patch" footwear.
  • Candidates may be required to drive a municipal vehicle for certain duties and will be required to hold a valid Class "G" Ontario Driver's License with a clean drivers abstract.
  • Must be physically able to perform all duties including heavy lifting, daily prolonged walking of greater distances on uneven surfaces.
  • Candidates are expected to work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada.


What we offer you
 

  • Rate of pay: $19.57 per hour.
  • Hours of work: 7:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday to Friday up to a maximum of 40 hours per week


Additional information and requirements

Students who previously worked with the Municipality are required to re-apply each year and submit the appropriate school documentation.

Prior to starting the position, the successful candidate must provide, at their own expense, the following:
 

  • A current Driver's Abstract and proof of a valid Ontario Class "G" Drivers License.
  • A current (within the last 180 days) satisfactory criminal reference check, directly from a Canadian Police Information Centre. Criminal Records Checks from third party agencies are not acceptable. Applicants who have been employed with the Municipality within the last year and have provided a criminal reference check within the last 365 days are exempt from providing another criminal reference check.
